Video: Watch Jimmy Kimmel Explain What Happened During the Oscars Best Picture Fiasco
The Academy Awards host sorted out the Best Picture confusion during his monologue on Monday's episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!"
February 28, 2017Jimmy Kimmel hosted the 89th Academy Awards on Sunday to rave reviews. However, the mistake surrounding the Best Picture announcement, in which Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty wrongly declared “La La Land” the winner over “Moonlight,” grabbed many of the next day’s headlines. On Monday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on ABC, Jimmy got a chance to explain what went down.
Replaying clips from the incident, Jimmy went through the confusion beat-by-beat, starting with Beatty’s puzzled handing of the card to Dunaway.
“Clyde threw Bonnie under the bus,”Jimmy said.
The host said he knew something was off when the stage manager appeared after “La La Land” was announced as winner. “The audience is confused, the people standing around me are confused. I assume everyone at home is confused, and I’m probably supposed to do something because no one’s doing anything,” Jimmy said.
Of course, “Moonlight” was eventually revealed to be the true winner. Jimmy revealed Denzel Washington then became an improbable hero for yelling at Jimmy to get the film’s director Barry Jenkins to the mic. Jimmy also made a point to clarify that, despite theories to the contrary, the fiasco wasn’t one of his trademark pranks. If that had been the case, Jimmy said, “there would’ve been a Bed Bath & Beyond coupon inside” the envelope.
