2022 Emmy Winners: ‘Succession,’ ‘Ted Lasso,’ ‘Squid Games,’ and ‘Abbott Elementary’ Take Home Top Prizes
74th Primetime Emmy Awards hosted by "SNL" star Kenan Thompson
July 12, 2022There were a lot of familiar faces accepting trophies on TV’s biggest night, but Monday’s 74th Emmy Awards also saw several first time winners giving acceptance speeches on stage. Kenan Thompson kicked the evening off with a song and dance number celebrating “the greatest invention in the history of mankind – television.”
“I mean, if it weren’t for TV, what would we do with our free time? Read books? No one in this room has read a book in the last 50 years,” the host said.
Past winners “Ted Lasso” and “Succession” took home the top prizes for Best Comedy and Best Drama respectively, but some new shows on the scene also walked away with some shiny hardware. Sheryl Lee Ralph won her first Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress on ABC’s hit comedy “Abbott Elementary” while the show’s creator and star, Quinta Brunson, accepted the award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series (while a playing-dead Jimmy Kimmel laid at her feet). Stern Show guest Jerrod Carmichael walked on stage wearing just a fur coat to accept his Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
