Howard Remembers ‘SCTV’ and ‘Happy Gilmore’ Star Joe Flaherty
“Now that’s comedy right there … he was a talented guy,” he says of late comedian’s Count Floyd character
April 8, 2024Joe Flaherty, the veteran comedic actor who first made waves on the Canadian sketch comedy show “SCTV,” has died. He was 82.
“He was a funny guy,” Howard said Monday of Flaherty, who, as a member of Chicago’s Second City Theater, worked with the likes of John Belushi and Harold Ramis.
Although Flaherty might have been better known for his work as the heckling fan in Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore” and as the dad in NBC’s “Freaks and Geeks,” Howard is particularly fond of the actor’s time on “SCTV,” of which he was a part of its original cast.
“The best character he did for my money was Count Floyd,” he noted of Flaherty’s take on a late-night horror TV host who appeared to be a vampire but howled like a wolf. “Now that’s comedy right there … he was a talented guy.”
