Hear Greta Van Fleet’s New Song ‘Always There’ Off ‘A Million Little Pieces’ Soundtrack
Rockers first recorded the tune during sessions for their 2018 studio debut, “Anthem of the Peaceful Army”
September 9, 2019Greta Van Fleet fans rejoice—the band has just released a surprise single.
The Michigan-based rockers unexpectedly dropped “Always There,” a tune off the soundtrack to “A Million Little Pieces,” Sam Taylor-Johnson’s upcoming adaptation of James Frey’s controversial book of the same name.
Greta Van Fleet recorded “Always There” during the sessions for their 2018 studio debut “Anthem of the Peaceful Army” but the song didn’t make the cut. “[I]t was ultimately decided the song didn’t fit the tone of the album. Thus, it appeared to us serendipitous when ‘A Million Little Pieces’ requested to use it in the film’s soundtrack,” they explained on Facebook, adding, “We are pleased to share this song with you.”
Other songs featured on the soundtrack include R.E.M.’s “Drive,” Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” and the Velvet Underground’s “Candy Says,” among others. The album also includes the film’s original score composed by Leopold Ross, Claudia Sarne, and Oscar-winner Atticus Ross. As Stern Show fans may remember, Ross also recently teamed up with his Nine Inch Nails compatriot Trent Reznor to compose the score for Jonah Hill’s critically acclaimed directorial debut “Mid90s,” which the actor and filmmaker spoke to Howard about at length during his most recent visit to the show.
For Greta Van Fleet, “Always There” is just the latest example of the band finding success these past few years. Not only did they release their long-awaited debut album but they’ve also embarked on a massive world tour, made their very first visit to “Saturday Night Live,” and even appeared on Howard Stern’s Tribute to David Bowie, performing the tune “The Jean Genie.” “It was an honor to be able to cover ‘Jean Genie,’” lead guitarist Jake Kiszka said at the time. “The blues sensibilities in that song are something the whole band could connect with.”
