VIDEO: From ‘Game of Thrones’ to ‘Gilligan’s Island,’ Jon Hein Reveals When Some of Howard’s Favorite TV Shows ‘Jumped the Shark’

Howard recently overheard someone at a party using the phrase “jump the shark” to describe a TV show in decline, leading to a conversation between the two of them about Stern Show staffer Jon Hein, a.k.a. the man who both coined the phrase and operated JumpTheShark.com before selling it off to TV Guide.

While the website is no longer up and running, Jon’s passion for television remains unwavering. On Tuesday, he spoke to Howard on-air about all things TV and shared his thoughts on the fate of his once-popular website. “Selling it was tough, but I didn’t think it would then just be lost,” Jon said before offering his take on when classic shows like “Seinfeld,” “Gilligan’s Island,” and the recently concluded “Game of Thrones” began their near inevitable downturns.

Howard and his co-host Robin Quivers had fun debating with Jon about when their favorite shows jumped the shark, leading Robin to wonder why he didn’t bust out this neat party trick at her recent birthday gathering where Jon apparently stayed pretty quiet.

Jon admitted some shows never jump the shark, including David Simon and George Pelecanos’ HBO drama “The Wire,” which he opined was probably the best show of all time. Robin wasn’t sure if she agreed with Jon’s assessment, but Howard was deferential.

“He’s the expert,” Howard concluded. “Listen, he’s got the body to prove it. This is the body of a guy who watches TV 24 hours a day.
