C.I.A. officer Carrie Mathison doesn’t think she’s a double agent in the first look at the eighth and final season of “Homeland,” but thanks to a 7-month-long gap in her memory she can’t quite be sure.

The new teaser for Showtime’s Emmy-winning spy drama features Mathison (Stern Show veteran Claire Danes) getting grilled by her own government after escaping from a Russian gulag. “Have you ever conspired with a foreign intelligence officer or service?” a grumpy-looking man in a suit asks her during what appears to be an interrogation.

“What, are you accusing me of something?” Mathison responds with more than a hint of annoyance.

Claire’s character may be right to grow indignant—she’s spent the series’ first seven seasons defending America from violent terrorists—but it’s hard to blame the man for asking as the world they inhabit has played host to more heel turns than a “Dancing With the Stars” finale episode. Besides, Mathison can’t definitively say she hasn’t double-crossed her country when she can barely recall being in captivity. “How can you be so sure if there’s 180 days of your life you don’t remember?” the suit asks her.

In real life, of course, Danes has no trouble answering the hard questions. During her return to the Stern Show last year she opened up to Howard about her first kiss with eventual Oscar winner Jared Leto on the set of “My So-Called Life” and also surprised everyone by revealing she was just a few months away from giving birth to her second child, Rowan. The award-winning actress even discussed what fans could expect from the final season of “Homeland.” Listen to her explain why she was really conflicted about the show coming to an end (below).

“Homeland” co-stars Mandy Patinkin, Maury Sterling, Linus Roache, Costa Ronin, Nimrat Kaur, and Numan Acar as well as Beau Bridges as the show’s newly elected U.S. president.

“Homeland” Season 8 debuts Sunday, Feb. 9 at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime.
