AUDIO: Hear Jimi Hendrix’s Previously Unheard Cover of Muddy Waters’ ‘Mannish Boy’

Jimi Hendrix’s previously unheard cover of Muddy Waters’ “Mannish Boy” has finally been released.

The track was recorded nearly 50 years ago with bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles at the Record Plant in New York City and will appear on Jimi’s upcoming compilation album “Both Sides of the Sky.” In addition to containing 10 previously unreleased or unavailable Hendrix recordings from 1968 to 1970, the album also features Stephen Stills, Johnny Winter and Lonnie Youngblood.

The timing of the “Mannish Boy” release may seem like a bit of kismet considering how Howard and his staff spent a sizable portion of Tuesday morning’s Stern Show discussing the unparalleled talents and legacy of Jimi, who would’ve been 75 last November.

In particular, Fred Norris complimented another of Jimi’s covers—his 1968 rendition of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower.” “[It’s the] best cover version of any song ever,” Fred said on air.

Howard, meanwhile, lamented a missed opportunity in nearly getting to see Jimi perform at New York City’s Fillmore East in 1970. “I would’ve seen Jimi right before he died, but I never got to,” Howard said, recalling how a friend had tickets but instead decided to take a guy she was interested in.
