VIDEO: Alec Baldwin, Ashton Kutcher, and More Look at the Complicated Legacy of Elvis Presley in ‘The King’
Documentary features interviews with a slew of celebrities
May 22, 2018Elvis Presley serves as a metaphor for the sociopolitical state of America itself in the star-studded trailer for “The King,” the latest documentary from award-winning filmmaker Eugene Jarecki (“Why We Fight”).
The film’s newly released teaser (above) follows Eugene as he travels from Memphis to Las Vegas and beyond in the King’s infamous 1963 Rolls-Royce, searching for various landmarks that played prominent roles in Elvis’s life. He also interviews a variety of celebrities and non-celebrities alike about the rock and roll legend’s legacy as well as the state of America in general over 40 years after his death.
Among those sharing their thoughts on Elvis and the land which birthed him are Stern Show veterans Alec Baldwin, Ashton Kutcher, and Dan Rather, as well as celebrities like Chuck D of Public Enemy and Prophets of Rage, “The Deuce” creator David Simon, actor Ethan Hawke, media personality Van Jones, political pundit James Carville, comedian Mike Myers, and singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash, who is also the daughter of music icon and onetime Elvis collaborator Johnny Cash.
“America is great when America does great things,” Baldwin explains in the trailer (above). “Well, America’s been doing a lot of bad things.”
When Alec joined the Stern Show most recently in December, the Emmy-winning actor had much to say about the state of America, at one point even revealing he might do a one-man Broadway show as President Donald Trump, someone he frequently portrays on “Saturday Night Live.” Listen to Alec’s full sit-down with Howard here and check out a clip from their conversation (below).
“The King,” executive produced by Rosanna Cash, Steven Soderbergh, and Errol Morris, rolls into theaters June 22. Watch the official trailer (above).
