VIDEO: Steve Carell Struggles to Help Timothée Chalamet Deal With Addiction in ‘Beautiful Boy’ Trailer

Past Stern Show guest Steve Carell and “Call Me By Your Name” standout Timothée Chalamet are a father and son struggling with addiction, relapse, recovery, and survival in “Beautiful Boy,” an Amazon Studios film headed to theaters in October.

Based on a set of best-selling memoirs from Nic and David Sheff, the family drama’s official trailer (above) begins as the Oscar-nominated actors are sitting down for lunch. But before they can even order, the newly estranged father and son begin arguing. “You’re just embarrassed because I was like … this amazing thing, like your special creation or something, and you don’t like who I am now.” Timothée tells him (above).

The remainder of the clip contrasts joyful memories the two characters share against the sad state of their current relationship, which apparently includes drug abuse, arguments, and plenty of sadness.

For Chalamet, “Beautiful Boy” follows a string of critically acclaimed films including “Call Me by Your Name” and “Lady Bird,” the latter of which Monday’s Stern Show guest Dave Matthews spoke fondly of before performing his hit 1996 tune “Crash Into Me,” which appeared on the film’s soundtrack. For Steve, “Beautiful Boy” serves as just the latest piece of evidence that the “Foxcatcher,” “Battle of the Sexes,” and “Welcome to Marwen” star has more dramatic chops than were perhaps on display during his long run on “The Office.” In fact, when the actor sat down with Howard a few years back, he revealed his portrayal of real-life villain John du Pont was so dark it made his co-stars a bit uncomfortable on set.

Directed by Felix Van Groeningen, “Beautiful Boy” co-stars Maura Tierney and Amy Ryan. The film opens Oct. 12 in theaters. Watch the trailer (above).
