Fall TV Preview 2018: From ‘Mayans M.C.’s’ Debut to ‘House of Cards’ Finale

Fall is on the horizon, which means the weather will cool, the leaves might change colors, fantasy football will pick back up, and many anticipated shows will be returning to or debuting on TV.
The new series cover just about every topic imaginable, from action-filled shows about motorcycle gangs, prison escapes, and government spies to emotionally distraught genre-benders exploring children’s TV stars, medical research volunteers, and married suburban couples. Many returning shows, meanwhile, are teasing massive changes, including multiple cases where a series is forging ahead without last season’s topline stars.

“Jack Ryan”
Stars: John Krasinski, Abbie Cornish, Wendell Pierce, Ali Suliman, Noomi Rapace
Premiere date: Friday, Aug. 31 on Amazon
Synopsis: One of literature’s most legendary super-spies finally finds his way to the small screen in Amazon’s upcoming action-thriller, focusing on the early days of the Tom Clancy character Jack Ryan. Played here by Krasinski, the C.I.A. analyst turned action hero has previously been portrayed by Ben Affleck, Harrison Ford, and Stern Show regular Alec Baldwin.
“Ozark” Season 2
Stars: Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner, Janet McTeer
Premiere date: Friday, Aug. 31 on Netflix
Synopsis: Season 2 of the Emmy-nominated crime thriller sees professional money launderer Marty Byrde (Bateman) once again making difficult choices to protect his recently relocated family from an unforgiving drug cartel he inadvertently double-crossed.
“Mayans M.C.”
Stars: J.D. Pardo, Edward James Olmos, Jacqueline Obradors, Sarah Bolger, Richard Cabral
Premiere date: Tuesday, Sept. 4 on FX
Synopsis: Set in the same biker-filled fictional universe as “Sons of Anarchy,” Kurt Sutter’s new motorcycle-fueled crime drama “Mayans M.C.” follows EZ Reyes (Pardo), a recently paroled young man who joins up with the vicious motorcycle club in a chapter near the California/Mexico border.
“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Season 13
Stars: Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, Danny DeVito
Premiere date: Wednesday, Sept. 5 on FXX
Synopsis: After a nearly 18-month hiatus, the gang is back. The new season will focus on several new and continuing story lines, including Charlie’s (Day) quest to have a child, Dee (Olson) diving head first into feminism and the Time’s Up movement, and Mac (McElhenney) further exploring his newly embraced sexuality. The Season 13 trailer also contains a thinly veiled “Seinfeld” reference, Frank (DeVito) sealing a wound with “lemon juice and hot glue,” and an appearance from actress, comedian, and 2014 Stern Show guest Mindy Kaling, who appears taken aback by a life-like, open-mouthed sex doll. No word yet on whether Stern Show staffer JD Harmeyer is set to direct any of this season’s episodes.
“Marvel’s Iron Fist” Season 2
Stars: Finn Jones, Jessica Henwick, Jessica Stroup, Sacha Dhawan, Alice Eve, Simone Missick
Premiere date: Friday, Sept. 7 on Netflix
Synopsis: The sophomore season of Netflix’s martial arts-heavy Marvel series sees billionaire crimefighter Danny Rand (Jones) returning to his roots with everything from a comic book-inspired throwback outfit to a rekindled rivalry which just might turn Davos (Sacha Dhawan), an old friend, into the Iron Fist’s next foe.
“The Deuce” Season 2
Stars: James Franco, Maggie Gyllenhaal
Premiere date: Sunday, Sept. 9 on HBO
Synopsis: From the creators of “The Wire” (David Simon & George Pelecanos) comes this ‘70s-set drama about the birth of modern pornography and the evolution of the sex industry from within New York City’s Times Square. Season 2 jumps ahead several years in the story to 1977, when the city’s porn industry has grown more garish and lurid than ever.
“Kidding”
Stars: Jim Carrey, Catherine Keener, Frank Langella, Judy Greer, Cole Allen
Premiere date: Sunday, Sept. 9 on Showtime
Synopsis: Showtime’s upcoming dramedy stars Carrey in his first regular TV role since “In Living Color” in the 1990s. The comedian, actor, and recent Stern Show guest plays Mr. Pickles, a mild-mannered children’s television icon on the brink of a mental breakdown after his family life begins to fall apart around him.
“Forever”
Stars: Fred Armisen, Maya Rudolph
Premiere date: Friday, Sept. 14 on Amazon
Synopsis: “Saturday Night Live” veterans Armisen and Rudolph star as Oscar and Judy, a married couple who may finally be hitting a rut after 12 years of identical walks, conversations, and shuffleboard games. But all that changes after they decide to spice things up with a ski trip, which somehow leads to a massive upending of their lives.
“Maniac”
Stars: Jonah Hill, Emma Stone, Justin Theroux, Sally Field, Sonoya Mizuno
Premiere date: Friday, Sept. 21 on Netflix
Synopsis: Based on a Norwegian TV show of the same name, this Cary Fukunaga-directed dark comedy follows two strangers (Stone and Hill) who volunteer for a radical pharmaceutical trial purporting to solve all their mental and emotional problems. The treatment, which involves taking pills designed by a mysterious doctor (played by Theroux of “Leftovers” fame), does not go as planned.
“The Voice” Season 15
Stars: Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson
Premiere date: Monday, Sept. 24 on NBC
Synopsis: The competitive reality series seeks out the strongest vocalists from across the country and invites them to compete in a blockbuster vocal competition. “American Idol” crossover Jennifer Hudson joins the coaches group this season, taking a seat alongside fellow Stern Show guests Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine as well as country music star Blake Shelton.
“This Is Us” Season 3
Stars: Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, Justin Hartley
Premiere date: Tuesday, Sept. 5 on NBC
Synopsis: Dan Fogelman’s award-winning drama follows the Pearson family at several different points in their lives. While Season 2 brought the tragic death of main character, the show’s unique structure means that won’t necessarily stop them from appearing on screen. During a recent visit to the Stern Show, Mandy, who stars as Rebecca Pearson, revealed to Howard some of the series finale had already been shot. Hear more of what she said here.
“SEAL Team” Season 2
Stars: David Boraenaz, Max Thieriot, Jessica Paré, Neil Brown Jr., A.J. Buckley, Judd Lormand, Toni Trucks
Premiere date: Wednesday, Oct. 3 on CBS
Synopsis: Action-packed military drama once again follows the Bravo Team, an elite unit of United States Navy SEALs who engage in dangerous missions across the globe, often leaving their family behind at a moment’s notice.
“The Man in the High Castle” Season 3
Stars: Rufus Sewell, Luke Kleintank, and Alexa Davalos
Premiere date: Friday, Oct. 5 on Amazon
Synopsis: The Philip K. Dick-inspired sci-fi drama explores what it would be like if the Allied Powers had lost WWII, and Japan and Germany ruled the United States. The series took a long hiatus after Season 2, but the much-anticipated new season promises a rising resistance in the midst of darkness as well as Obergruppenfuhrer Smith (Sewell) learning about dimension-hopping film couriers.
“The Walking Dead” Season 9
Stars: Andrew Lincoln, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Melissa McBride, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan
Premiere date: Sunday, Oct. 7 on AMC
Synopsis: Survivors of the apocalypse once again butt heads on Season 9 of AMC’s long-running zombie drama. Recent clips teased plotlines involving Maggie (Cohan) and Daryl’s (Reedus) growing discontentment, a stand-off involving Carol (McBride), and the differences between Rick Grimes (Lincoln) and the villainous Negan (Morgan). “The Flash” Season 5
Stars: Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Jesse L. Martin, Carlos Valdes, Tom Cavanagh, Keiynan Lonsdale
Premiere date: Tuesday, Oct. 9 on the CW
Synopsis: TV’s fastest superhero races back to the small screen with another season of the “The Flash,” a DC Comics inspired series about the super-quick Barry Allen (Gustin) and his plucky group of friends who zip around Central City fighting crime and the villainous super-powered meta-humans who cause it.
“Black Lightning” Season 2
Stars: Cress Williams, China Anne McClain, Nafessa Williams, Christine Adams, Marvin Jones III, Damon Gupton, James Remar
Premiere date: Tuesday, Oct. 9 on the CW
Synopsis: One of the CW’s more recent DC Comics adaptations, “Black Lightning” follows a superhero of the same name who retired from crimefighting for nearly and decided to serve his city in a different way—as a dad and a high school principal. All that changes, however, after a crime wave engulfs his community and he’s forced to don the Black Lightning super-suit once more.
“The Alec Baldwin Show”
Stars: Alec Baldwin
Premiere date: Sunday, Oct. 14 on ABC
Synopsis: The one-hour talk show hosted by the Emmy-winning Stern Show regular made a single episode debut in March and featured intimate and engaging conversations with comedian Jerry Seinfeld and “Saturday Night Live” colleague Kate McKinnon.
“Supergirl” Season 4
Stars: Melissa Benoist, Mechad Books, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan, David Harewood, Calista Flockhart, Nicole Maines
Premiere date: Sunday, Oct. 14 on the CW
Synopsis: Kara Danvers (Benoist), a.k.a. Supergirl, faces a few new challenges in Season 4, including her black kryptonite-created Russian double, the reported arrival of legendary Superman foe Brainiac, and winning over viewers on an all new night—Sundays. The shows cast will undergo some changes, too, with the arrival of transgender activist Nicole Maines (playing a transgender superhero named Nia Nal/Dreamer) and “Star Trek” veteran Brent Spiner (as Vice President Baker).
“Arrow” Season 7
Stars: Stephen Amell, David Ramsey, Katie Cassidy, Colin Donnell, Emily Bett Rickards, Colton Haynes, Echo Kellum
Premiere date: Monday, Oct. 15 on the CW
Synopsis: After years of denying himself his own life as Oliver Queen in order to be The Arrow, Oliver (Amell) left Starling City with Felicity (Rickards) and made a home in suburbia. But their newly tranquil lives are upended when an evil new organization, H.I.V.E., takes over the newly-christened Star City. Oliver is forced to don the hood once more … but can he keep his aim as the Arrow without losing the life he has fought so hard to get back?
“Legends of Tomorrow” Season 4
Stars: Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Amy Pemberton, Dominic Purcell, Nick Zano, Tala Ashe
Premiere date: Monday, Oct. 22 on the CW
Synopsis: The DC Comics-inspired legends continue their new mission to protect the timeline from temporal aberrations – unusual changes to history that spawn potentially catastrophic consequences. When Nate, the grandson of J.S.A. member Commander Steel, unexpectedly finds himself with powers, he must overcome his own insecurities and find the hero within himself. Ultimately, the Legends will clash with foes both past and present, to save the world from a mysterious new threat.
“Ray Donovan” Season 6
Stars: Liev Schreiber, Jon Voight, Susan Sarandon
Premiere date: Sunday, Oct. 28 on Showtime
Synopsis: Ray Donovan (Schreiber) takes his “fixing” talents to New York City on Season 6 of Showtime’s critically acclaimed drama, reuniting once again with media mogul Sam Winslow (Sarandon) who’s looking for him to help her “fix” the outcome of a mayoral race. Elsewhere, Ray’s father Mickey (Voight) suffers a debilitating heart attack from his prison cell.
“House of Cards” Season 6
Stars: Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Constance Zimmer, Boris McGiver
Premiere date: Friday, Nov. 2 on Netflix
Synopsis: The Washington, D.C.-set political thriller had previously followed the Machiavellian machinations of Frank (Kevin Spacey) and Claire (Wright) Underwood, as they ascended from the ranks of Congress all the way to the White House. After Spacey’s firing, however, Wright’s character is set to become the sole focus of the show’s sixth and final season, which sees her holding the highest office in the land—President of the United States.
“Escape at Dannemora” (Showtime)
Stars: Patricia Arquette, Paul Dano, Benicio Del Toro
Premiere date: Sunday, Nov. 18 on Showtime
Synopsis: A love triangle between a prison employee (Arquette) and two convicted murderers (Dano, Del Toro) leads to a jailbreak and a massive manhunt on Showtime’s upcoming crime drama, directed by Stern Show regular Ben Stiller and based on real-life 2015 prison break in upstate New York.
