VIDEO: Steven Tyler, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Chris Stapleton, Train’s Pat Monahan, and More Cover the Beatles’ ‘All You Need Is Love’
Ensemble performance appears on the tribute DVD ‘Imagine: John Lennon 75th Birthday Concert,’ available Dec. 14
November 20, 2018Move over, “We Are the World” — there’s a new star-studded musical offering in town.
An ensemble performance video was released Tuesday featuring past Stern Show guests Steven Tyler, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Chris Stapleton, Peter Frampton, John Fogerty, and Train’s Pat Monahan delivering an unforgettable rendition of the Beatles classic “All You Need Is Love.”
The cover—which also includes contributions from Prophets of Rage’s Tom Morello, the Roots, Aloe Blacc, Eric Church, the Killers’ Brandon Flowers, Spoon, Juanes, and Kris Kristofferson—is a preview from the concert film “Imagine: John Lennon 75th Birthday Concert,” available next month.
The 22-track DVD chronicles a 2015 concert at the Theater at Madison Square Garden and contains several of the Beatles’ most beloved hits as well as some of Lennon’s best-known solo tunes. In addition to “All You Need Is Love,” there’s Tyler covering “Come Together,” Crow covering “A Hard Day’s Night,” and Kristofferson, Nelson, and Stapleton covering “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,” among many others. There’s also a special thank you track from Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono.
“It’s beautiful to see so many wonderful and talented musicians come together for this special show to celebrate John’s birthday,” Ono said in a statement about the release. “John’s art continues to give hope, light and happiness to generations of people everywhere. His belief that each of us can change the world continues to inspire the human race to believe in themselves, and his influence is everlasting in everyone’s hearts as we all share in the possibilities and power of music.”
When Lennon’s bandmate Sir Paul McCartney returned to the Stern Show in September, he and Howard discussed his relationship with Lennon. McCartney also revealed he has a soft spot for any and all Beatles covers. “Anyone who covers a song of mine, I love,” he told Howard. Check out more from the interview (below).
“Imagine: John Lennon 75th Birthday Concert” is available Dec. 14 on CD and DVD, with the LP edition arriving on Jan. 18.
