‘The Defiant Ones’: Music Moguls Jimmy Iovine, Dr. Dre Tease How They Transformed the Biz in Official Trailer
HBO's four-part documentary series, co-starring Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Gwen Stefani, Eminem, and U2's Bono, premieres in July
June 16, 2017HBO dropped the official trailer for “The Defiant Ones,” an upcoming docu-series chronicling the rise of Interscope Records, the dominance of gangsta rap in the ’90s, and the unlikely partnership between music moguls-in-the-making Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre.
The four-part series features interviews with many of the biggest names in music, including past Stern Show guests Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Eminem, and Ice Cube, as well as music icons Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Tom Petty, Trent Reznor, Stevie Nicks, Nas, David Geffen, and more.
At one point the trailer shows Iovine helping Death Row’s Dre and Snoop essentially become rock stars, positioning the duo to appear on the cover of a popular music magazine as if they were Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.
“Who the fuck is Mick and Keith?” Snoop recalls saying.
In addition to a myriad of interviews, the Allen Hughes-directed docu-series includes never-before-seen footage of writing and recording sessions with Eazy-E, N.W.A., the Boss, U2, and more.
When Ice Cube visited the show in 2016, he spoke to Howard about his days with N.W.A. and his decades-long relationship with Dr. Dre. “I don’t care if we don’t talk to each other for 10 years, if we see each other it’s going to be like yesterday,” he told Howard.

“The Defiant Ones” premieres Sunday, July 9 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
