VIDEO: X-Men ‘New Mutants’ Spinoff Drops Horrific First Trailer
Josh Boone-directed film stars “Game of Thrones” actress Maisie Williams
October 13, 2017“Game of Thrones” starlet Maisie Williams has traded in the swords and dragons for an even more horrific setting—a haunted asylum for deranged adolescent mutants.
The actress who plays Arya Stark on the HBO drama takes center stage in the newly released trailer for 2018’s “The New Mutants,” an X-Men spinoff with a terrifying twist.
Set to a fittingly haunting cover of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall,” the official trailer (above) begins with Maisie’s character Rahne Sinclair (a.k.a. the mutant Wolfsbane) being interrogated by Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga) in a strange and seemingly sinister insane asylum. Punctuating their conversation are a series of increasingly disturbing images, from walls with faces to washing machines with flaming arms.
This isn’t the first atypical superhero film for 20th Century Fox, which in 2016 released the subversively raunchy “Deadpool” to unprecedented success. Still, few expected director Josh Boone (behind the YA film “The Fault in Our Stars”) to deliver something quite so dreadful.
“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe,” he told EW earlier this year. “There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”
“The New Mutants,” co-starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik and “Stranger Things” star Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, creeps into theaters on April 18. Watch the official trailer (above).
