AUDIO: Hear Chris Cornell and His 13-Year-Old Daughter’s Heart-Wrenching Cover of Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’
“Recording this song with you was a special and amazing experience,” Toni Cornell writes in her Father’s Day tribute to the late rock singer
June 19, 2018In a special Father’s Day tribute this past Sunday, Chris Cornell’s 13-year-old daughter Toni Cornell debuted a poignant duet the duo recorded of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” She published the song on YouTube (above) along with a heartfelt message she penned to her late father.
“Daddy, I love you and miss you so much. You were the best father anyone could ask for. Our relationship was so special, and you were always there for me. You gave me courage when I didn’t have any. You believed in me when I didn’t. I miss your love every day,” Toni wrote. “Recording this song with you was a special and amazing experience I wish I could repeat 100 times over and I know you would too. Happy Father’s Day daddy, nothing compares to you.”
Though penned by Prince, “Nothing Compares 2 U” was popularized by Irish artist Sinéad O’Connor, whose 1990 recording of the song earned her a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year. Chris was known to cover the track quite frequently, too—the rock legend and repeat Stern Show guest reportedly performed it live nearly 100 times over the years, including in 2015 when he debuted a well-received acoustic version of the song on SiriusXM’s Lithium channel.
Howard paid heartfelt tribute to Chris following the musician’s untimely death in May 2017. “I loved that guy’s voice, I loved his look, loved the way he played the guitar, loved his songs, and now he’s gone,” Howard said before mentioning his fondness for many of Chris’s covers, including “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Howard and Robin also praised the newly released father-daughter duet on Monday’s Stern Show, with Howard specifically complimenting young Toni’s singing skills.
