VIDEO: New Lynyrd Skynyrd Doc Features Plane Crash Footage and Interviews With Surviving Band Members

One of history’s most iconic American rock bands is getting a brand-new documentary.

Showtime has released the official trailer for “Lynyrd Skynyrd: If I Leave Here Tomorrow,” a film from documentarian Stephen Kijak (“Stones in Exile”) exploring the rockers’ roots in the South, meteoric rise to fame, and drug and alcohol-fueled off-stage antics. The film also features footage from and discussions of the fatal plane accident which occurred while Lynyrd Skynyrd was at the height of its fame and claimed the lives of several members of the flight crew and band, including founding vocalist Ronnie Van Zant.

As Stern Show fans may remember, the band’s 1971 plane crash is a topic the band’s former drummer Artimus Pyle has discussed well before the making of this documentary. He sat down with Howard for an interview in 2007 to discuss not only surviving the horrific crash but also the life and legacy of Ronnie Van Zant, who he said was so talented he could have been a star with just about any band.

“Lynyrd Skynyrd: If I Leave Here Tomorrow” premiered at South by Southwest and debuts Saturday, Aug. 18 on Showtime. Watch the trailer (above).
