VIDEO: Foo Fighters Frontman Dave Grohl’s New Doc Will Feature a 23-Minute Long Solo Performance
Rock star and repeat Stern Show guest's “Play” arrives Aug. 10
August 2, 2018Dave Grohl’s new seven instrument solo song might not quite be “everlong,” but clocking in at 23-minutes it sure comes close.
The renowned rock star, repeat Stern Show guest, Foo Fighters frontman, and longtime Nirvana drummer dropped a teaser this week for “Play,” his new two-part documentary about the rewards and challenges of the music master which concludes with Dave performing a 23-minute-long song on seven different musical instruments.
Arriving in August, the Brandon Trost-filmed doc blends footage of young musicians fine-tuning their craft, behind-the-scenes moments of Dave and his “Sonic Highways” collaborator Mark Monroe planning the lengthy one-man concert, and then Dave’s actual performance itself. To pull it off, Dave reportedly performed the entire piece on one instrument at a time before cutting it together to make it appear as if seven Daves are performing at once.
“Watching my kids start to play music and learn to sing or play drums, it brings me back to the time when I was their age listening to albums, learning from listening … and when I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out,” Grohl explained in a statement.
“And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out … it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.”
Of course, Dave’s solo endeavors haven’t prevented him from recording new music with the Foo Fighters. The Grammy-winning band, which recently shared an Italian stage with Guns N’ Roses, is also gearing up for the North American leg of its massive “Concrete and Gold” world tour.
Dave Grohl’s “Play” premieres Aug. 10 on streaming services and becomes available on limited-edition vinyl on Sept. 28. Get more info here and watch the teaser (above).
