VIDEO: Claire Foy’s Dragon-Tattooed Antiheroine Channels Batman in ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’ Trailer
Upcoming adaptation is co-written by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight
June 7, 2018It must be arachnid week at Sony Pictures because less than 24 hours after dropping the official trailer for “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” the company debuted a first look at its hotly anticipated thriller “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.”
The fourth entry in the best-selling series that started with “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” the film follows the heavily tattooed antiheroine Lisbeth Salander (“The Crown’s” Claire Foy) as she this time wades into a dangerous conspiracy replete with nefarious hackers, spies, and government officials.
If the trailer (above) is any indication, which shows Lisbeth stringing up an antagonist from the ceiling like he was a Batman villain, her cult-adored character has picked up right where she left off as a take-no-prisoners vigilante. Lisbeth has been portrayed by big-named actresses like Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace in previous adaptations of entries from the Stieg Larsson-founded series and when Scarlett Johansson made her Stern Show debut in 2017, she revealed she too had been eager to play the part in David Fincher’s 2011 version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” but Rooney ultimately landed the role (as well as an eventual Oscar nomination for her work.)
“I really, really wanted that film because I felt I had something to contribute to it and I think Fincher just had a different vision for that character and Rooney Mara is, honestly, so perfect in it,” Scarlett told Howard during her interview.
Directed by up-and-coming horror auteur Fede Álvarez (“Don’t Breathe,” “Evil Dead”) and co-written by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” also stars Lakeith Stanfield, Christopher Convery, and Stephen Merchant.
“The Girl in the Spider’s Web” opens Nov. 9. Watch the official trailer (above).
