VIDEO: ‘Game of Thrones’ Star Sophie Turner Wreaks Havoc in X-Men Sequel ‘Dark Phoenix’
Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender also reprise their roles in the February 2019 film
September 27, 2018Sophie Turner frequently plays the victim as Sansa Stark on “Game of Thrones,” but in the official trailer for next year’s X-Men spinoff “Dark Phoenix,” she’s finally the one in control.
Turner stars as Jean Grey, one of the Marvel universe’s most formidable X-Men—her telekinetic powers can obliterate pretty much anyone or anything in her path, including former friends. The trailer (above) sees superpowers get strengthened even further after a run-in with a mysterious cosmic force, but with it comes a personality shift and soon she assumes the wickedly dangerous Phoenix alter ego.
Things get worse after she learns Professor X (James McAvoy) had lied to her for years about how her parents actually died. Before long, Jean/Phoenix is flipping over cop cars, destroying helicopters, and taking on her fellow mutants like Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Magento (Michael Fassbender), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), and Storm (Alexandra Shipp).
The good professor feels awfully bad about his decision to “protect her” from the truth, but his sentiments don’t do much to slow her down. “You’re always sorry, Charles,” Magneto tells him (above). “And there’s always a speech, and nobody cares.”
“Dark Phoenix,” directed by Simon Kinberg and co-starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain, opens Valentine’s Day 2019.
