VIDEO: Seth Rogen Sings His Way Into the Circle of Life in the Official ‘Lion King’ Trailer
Beyoncé, Donald Glover, James Earl Jones, and Chiwetel Ejiofor star in Disney’s Jon Favreau-directed remake, opening July 19
April 10, 2019Billy Eichner and Stern Show regular Seth Rogen find themselves singing their way through the jungle, the mighty jungle in the official trailer for “The Lion King,” opening July 19 in theaters.
Released Wednesday, the new look at Disney’s Jon Favreau-directed remake gives audiences a broad overview of Simba (Donald Glover) the lion’s journey, from crown prince of the animal kingdom to an outcast forced to grow up in the jungle with only Pumbaa the warthog (Rogen) and Timon the meerkat (Eichner) to guide him. While his animal companions don’t speak any lines in the trailer, they do take command of the screen at the end and sing a few bars from “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
Elsewhere in the clip, James Earl Jones reprises his role in the 1994 film as King Mufasa and dispenses fatherly wisdom to Simba, who is his heir to the throne much to the chagrin of Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Simba’s power-hungry uncle. There are also quick glimpses of Simba’s childhood friend and future love interest Nala (Beyoncé), his mother Sarabi (Alfre Woodard), the mandrill shaman Rafiki (John Kani), the red-billed hornbill royal advisor Zazu (John Oliver), and Florence Kasumba, Keegan-Michael Key, and repeat Stern Show guest Eric Andre as the three spotted hyenas out to make Simba’s life miserable.
“The Lion King” is Favreau’s second remake for Disney, following the actor, filmmaker, and past Stern Show guest’s blockbuster reimagining of “The Jungle Book” in 2016. It also serves as the studio’s third live-action remake of 2019, along with March’s “Dumbo” and May’s “Aladdin.”
