VIDEO: John Goodman Slaps Some Sense Into Adam Devine in New ‘Righteous Gemstones’ Trailer
Danny McBride’s televangelist comedy debuts Aug. 18 on HBO
July 8, 2019Praise the lord and pass the bag of stolen cash, there’s a new trailer for “The Righteous Gemstones,” Danny McBride’s upcoming HBO comedy series about a televangelist family living a life of sin and hilarious excess.
Repeat Stern Show guest John Goodman stars as Eli Gemstone, the ministry’s serious-minded patriarch struggling to teach his goofy, grifting children—including Jesse (McBride), Judy (Edi Patterson), and Kelvin Gemstone (Adam Devine)—how to run the family business.
Though Jesse, the heir-apparent, spends a good chunk of the new promo praying on his knees, he and his siblings are righteous in name only. “Good afternoon, Jesus … Grant me the strength to lead the people,” McBride’s character says over scenes of him stealing money and botching a mass baptism. “Your ability to accept me for the sinner I am only speaks to your greatness.”
“The Righteous Gemstones” is produced, created, written, and directed by McBride, who got his break in comedies like Stern Show regular Seth Rogen’s “Pineapple Express” before masterminding his own projects like HBO’s “Eastbound & Down” and “Vice Principals.” The new series co-stars Cassidy Freeman, Tony Calvero, Tim Baltz, Walton Goggins, and Greg Alan Williams.
“The Righteous Gemstones” premieres Aug. 18 at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
