AUDIO: The Highwomen Release Gender-Swapping Rendition of the Highwaymen’s Title Song

The Highwomen have unleashed their theme song.
On Tuesday, Maren Morris, Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, and Natalie Hemby’s all-female country music supergroup released “Highwomen,” a new ditty hailing from the band’s self-titled September album.
The twangy track is a gender-swapping homage to the signature song released in 1985 by the Highwomen’s forbearers, the Highwaymen, an all-male supergroup featuring country stars Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson.
Adapted with the help of American musician Jimmy Webb—the author of the original—the reworked tune includes a verse sung by U.K artist Yola as well as some backing vocals delivered by 2017 Stern Show guest Sheryl Crow. It also features guitar work from brothers Phil and Tim Hanseroth, who appeared alongside Brandi in her 2018 solo visit to the Stern Show, and musician Jason Isbell.
Just a few weeks in, August has already been a big month for the Highwomen. They’ve also released their original track “Redesigning Women” as well as their cover of the iconic Fleetwood Mac song “The Chain,” featured inside the trailer of the upcoming film “The Kitchen.” The country music supergroup even came into the Stern Show studio recently to deliver a special performance of both songs.
