David Bowie fans can celebrate the late rock icon’s birthday in style this year with the arrival of two previously unreleased John Lennon and Bob Dylan covers.

Rhino Records dropped the tunes along with a limited-edition 7-inch album late this week to honor what would’ve been Bowie’s 74th birthday. The first is a cover of “Tryin’ to Get to Heaven” (below), a song from Dylan’s Grammy-winning 1997 album “Time Out of Mind.” The second is of “Mother” (above), a Lennon classic hailing from the late Beatle’s debut solo album “John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band.”

Bowie recorded both songs in 1998 as part of separate projects. “Tryin’ to Get to Heaven” came while David was recording his “LiveandWell.com” live album while “Mother” was reportedly intended to be appear on a never-realized Lennon tribute album.

Sunday marks the 5th anniversary of Bowie’s death. As Stern Show listeners no doubt remember, Howard paid heartfelt tribute to the musician shortly after his passing and later put together a star-studded Howard 101 special featuring 25 different artists paying homage to Bowie and his unrivaled oeuvre with covers of their own.
