After nearly 50 years, the New York Yankees baseball organization has amended their ban on player beards to allow for well-groomed ones.
Reacting to owner Hal Steinbrenner’s announcement at a press conference that the change in policy was something that he’d been deliberating and debating over with family and staff for years, Howard was amused. “Can you imagine these meetings he’s having over facial hair?” he wondered Monday morning. “I grew a full beard waiting to hear the point of this press conference.”
A rule late owner George Steinbrenner established in 1976 in the spirit of discipline, Howard appeared to find the whole thing ridiculous. “Let ‘em grow a fucking beard,” he marveled to co-host Robin Quivers. “Who cares as long as the motherfucker can play baseball?”
