The biggest little band in the world, our former house band, and long-time Stern Show fixtures Train stopped by this morning to debut their brand new single ‘Angel in Blue Jeans’. When we say brand new, we really mean it: we’re not even positive that the band themselves had ever heard it before they played it for Howard.

Howard also grilled lead singer Pat Monahan and the rest of the boys about getting a new drummer, their experience at the Howard Stern Birthday Bash, and the music business today.
Here are the highlights from Howard’s interview with Train:
The obvious elephant in the room had to be addressed right up front: Why did Train have a brand new drummer? Train and they’re original drummer, Scott Underwood, had ‘parted ways’ because Scott decided to go in a ‘different direction’. At first, Pat was tight-lipped, likening it to a marriage breaking up, but he eventually admitted that Scott wanted to write more, so he’s going out on his own.
Train’s new drummer, Drew, had toured with Pat when he pursued a solo career. After that stint, he went to law school and became a lawyer, only to rejoin Pat once Train found themselves drummer-less.

Howard asked Pat if he’s jealous that Maroon 5’s Adam Levine is a judge on the Voice and pat said he is not. ‘That’s not the way to [Bruce] Springsteen’s career’, he said, adding that he wants to pick up the Springsteen mantle once the Boss retires in 50 to 100 years.
Howard will be eternally grateful to Train for being the house band for the Howard Stern Birthday Bash. Not only did they perform with luminaries like John Mayer, Jon Bon Jovi, and Adam Levine, but they blocked out two full days of their schedule to sound check and rehearse. Pat said everyone at the show was great, and he’s still constantly asked about the experience.

Pat had to really think when Howard asked him to name a band or artist who was a real dick to them in the early days, and the only name he came up with was a band called ‘Guster’. It wasn’t the band as much as their tour manager, who kicked Train off the stage because they went two minutes over their allotted time limit.
Pat admitted that he was close to having a break down right in front of Howard because he’s so obsessed and crazed over the band’s new album, ‘Bulletproof Picasso’, which is due out September 18th. Pat listens to it constantly and sometimes feels like it’s good, sometimes he feels like he doesn’t have it anymore. Howard pointed out that the greatest songwriters of all time, like Paul McCartney, can put out an album today and people won’t really care. Pat theorized that artists stop hanging out with young people as they get older and it negatively affects their relevancy – pointing specifically to McCartney’s recent album ‘Kisses on the Bottom’.
