What Amy Schumer Said to Beyoncé at the Met Gala
As funny as she is on the stage and screen, the famous comic tells Howard she’s a total introvert
Few people would ever describe comedian Amy Schumer as being shy, but in her new book, “The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo,” she writes about how she considers herself to be an extreme introvert. During her interview on Tuesday, Amy told Howard just how much she hates having to meet and talk with people she doesn’t know.
“That is my worst nightmare,” she said, adding that she also has trouble with Hollywood parties and lavish award shows: “It’s people doing an impression of having a conversation.”
In May, she got dressed up and attended the Met Gala – a venerable who’s who of A-list stars and celebrities. “It felt like a punishment,” Amy said, though she was quick to say that it was an honor to be invited. “I left not the second I could. I left earlier than I should have been allowed,” she added.
The evening wasn’t all bad, however. After all, Amy did get to meet Beyoncé, who asked if this was her first time attending the event.
Amy responded: “It’s my last.”
She didn’t know it at the time, but Beyoncé is going up against Amy this year for the Outstanding Variety Special Emmy. “Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo” is nominated for three awards this year, including a directing nod for Chris Rock, but Amy told Howard there’s no way she will beat out Beyoncé and her HBO film “Lemonade.”
“I was like, ‘Oh fuck,'” Amy said, describing her reaction after hearing she was nominated alongside Beyoncé. Even if she doesn’t win an Emmy, taping her special at Madison Square Garden was good enough for Amy, who called it, “the best night of my life.”
“It’s a really amazing room,” Amy said. “It actually, no bullshit, feels intimate…It was so cool.”
What made it even cooler? No other female comic has ever played at MSG.
“It felt very meaningful to me,” Amy told Howard.
