Wife of the legendary D.J. knows Kid Kelly is talented, but she still doesn’t know his real name
Voting is now open for who should be inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2018 and if Kathy Gilbert gets her way, her husband Kid Kelly will finally get his due. The SiriusXM D.J. has been in broadcasting for over 20 years and undoubtedly deserves a spot in the hall and on Monday’s Stern Show Kathy stopped by to tell Howard and his listeners why they should cast their votes for Kid Kelly.
“Kid has a very special talent and radio skill,” Kathy explained. “Not everybody can do what Kid does.” As displayed in the video (below), Kid Kelly is a master at what’s known as “hitting the post” — talking up a record right up until the lyrics of the song kick in. Kid Kelly does more than just talk, though. He drops in additional sound effects, jingles, and pre-recorded bits with perfect timing.
“He’s wanted to do this since he was 7 years old,” Kathy continued.
And while Kathy knows all about Kid Kelly’s career she revealed she has no idea what his real name is. “I call him Kid Kelly,” she told Howard. According to her, that is his actual legal name with even his driver’s license identifying him as his longtime on-air title.
Kid Kelly and Kathy have been with one another for 22 years, almost as long as he’s been on the radio. They met at a photoshoot that featured local New York D.J.s and the New Jersey Nets cheerleading team back when Kathy was the squad’s director. Though she initially tried to set him up with someone else on the team, Kathy soon realized she and Kid had more chemistry and began dating. Six years later, they were married.
With the polls now open, Kathy wanted to make sure everyone listening knew how they can help get Kid Kelly into the Radio Hall of Fame. Not only can listeners vote for Kid via text or online submission, she said one lucky fan will win $5,000 for their pledged support, so long as they upload a screenshot of their vote to social media along with a special hashtag. Find all of the details of the contest on Kid Kelly’s official Facebook page.
Since she’s trying so hard to get Kid Kelly into the Radio Hall of Fame, Howard wondered how Kathy would feel if her husband doesn’t end up making the cut.
“I’ll love him either way,” Kathy replied with a smile.
