Stern Show Staffer Mike Shares His Harrowing Story of Being Shot and Living to Tell About It
“I was fighting for my life,” he recalls for Howard
The toughest person on the Stern Show may have been determined on Monday morning after a staffer named Mike came in studio and recalled for Howard how he almost died during an armed robbery when he was just 19 years old.
“I was coming out of a diner and there were two guys waiting for me,” Mike explained. One of the guys was wearing a mask and pointed a gun at Mike as he and his buddy were getting into his car. Rather than hand over any possessions, though, Mike turned to the gunman and told him “fuck you.”
“I don’t think they expected me to say ‘fuck you’ to them,” Mike said. And while he admits mouthing off probably wasn’t the smartest move at that moment, he told Howard he couldn’t have lived with himself had he done nothing during the situation.
The masked man fired a shot into Mike’s side before fleeing the scene.
“It went through my lung, through my stomach, into my liver,” Mike continued, adding it all happened very quickly but described the pain as a burning sensation similar to a torch being drilled inside of him. But that didn’t stop him from trying to chase after the guy who shot him.
“I was gonna go after them,” Mike said. “I pulled the car out, I drove about 10 feet … then I passed out.”
An ambulance rushed Mike to the hospital where he was placed into a medically induced coma for multiple weeks while doctors treated his injuries and operated on his damaged organs.
“I was fighting for my life. I was in bad shape,” Mike told Howard.
He’s since recovered though he said he still takes certain precautions with his abdominal area. As for his assailants, Mike knows they were eventually arrested and went to jail although he’s not certain if the one who shot him is still behind bars.
As Mike was telling his harrowing tale on the air, Howard received word that Ronnie “the Limo Driver” Mund was in the hallway making cracks at his co-worker’s storytelling ability. He denied saying anything too critical once in the studio, though.
“I wasn’t talking shit!” Ronnie yelled, claiming fellow Stern Show staffer Shuli Egar was only trying to cause trouble by telling Howard about his comment. Shuli found it odd Ronnie would make a snide remark about someone else’s storytelling abilities considering he can struggle to tell his own stories at times.
“You are, without a doubt, one of the worst storytellers,” Shuli joked.
“Let me tell you – the man took a bullet and lived,” Howard said, defending his young staffer.
“What was more painful for you: the actual bullet or Ronnie’s critique?” Howard then asked Mike with a laugh.
