“Every sound is Michael Winslow, I’m so fascinated by that,” Howard says of ‘Police Academy’ actor
Known as “The Man of 10,000 Sound Effects,” actor and comedian Michael Winslow has famously demonstrated his talents in the “Police Academy” movies, “Space Balls,” and even on a ripping rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.”
On Monday, the actor took on the daunting task of covering the Stern Show’s theme song, Rob Zombie’s “The Great American Nightmare,” using nothing but his vocals. “There are no instruments here … every sound is Michael Winslow, I’m so fascinated by that,” Howard revealed, noting Winslow was able to mimic drums, bass, guitars, and synthesizers. “Crazy, that’s a human being … now try it yourself at home.”
“That guitar is killer,” sound effects maestro Fred Norris added.
When asked about his process, citing influences like the Ohio Players and Herbie Hancock, Winslow spoke about recreating the synth sounds from the original version. “There’s different ways of making that noise,” he explained before going through the different directions he could go in. “Or, you can take that noise and use it as Billie Holiday.”
