Gary Dell’abate Interrupted Pearl Jam’s Stern Show Debut With a Microphone Test
“It was a real distraction, I was in the middle of a question,” Howard says of executive producer’s mishap
Howard’s interview with Pearl Jam Monday morning briefly featured an unexpected vocalist — Stern Show executive producer Gary Dell’Abate. “It was a real distraction, I was in the middle of a question,” he noted on Tuesday of Gary’s awkward cameo.
“He was louder than you,” co-host Robin Quivers added.
According to Gary, he’s not to blame for the hiccup but rather it was someone from the tech team who hit the button during an equipment check. “I have a whole new set-up, so we were trying to figure out how stuff worked, and he wanted to test my mic,” he recalled. “If you really listen, what I said was, ‘I’m so afraid I’m going to be on the air,’ and then I was.”
“Evidently, it wasn’t Gary’s fault, but of course it was Gary,” Howard responded before offering his producer some constructive criticism. “I still say Gary should have known to say to the tech person, ‘Listen, I don’t think this is a good idea.’”
Staffer Jason Kaplan, who has given Gary a hard time in the past, was disappointed when his initial investigation cleared his colleague of any wrongdoing. However, upon further digging, Howard pointed out that Gary could have suggested checking his equipment the night before — but failed to think of it. “Ah, so it is your fault,” Howard teased before adding, “Jason, I found a way to blame Gary — don’t worry about it.”
