10 years ago, recent Stern Show guest Billy Joel stepped onto the stage of a small New York City club to talk his life, career, and play some tunes. And now, for the first time ever, the video version of that special, the Billy Joel Town Hall, is now available on the SiriusXM app.
“We didn’t have an app at that point at SiriusXM, so we never released this video, this incredible moment of Billy Joel,” Howard said Wednesday of why it took a decade for the visual component. “I’m very excited for people to see it.”
In addition to Joel, a wide range of artists stopped by to pay tribute to the Piano Man, from P!nk to Tony Bennett to Boyz II Men — who performed a powerful rendition of “Just the Way You Are” for Billy. “He loved their a cappella version and couldn’t wipe the smile off his face, which you’ll be able to see now,” Howard noted of Billy’s reaction.
“What I think was also special about it is Billy didn’t necessarily know all these people had been affected by his music, and they came out and told stories of why these songs meant something to them,” co-host Robin Quivers added.
And, of course, Howard was blown away by the music. “It’s just one man on a piano — it sounds like there’s an orchestra behind him,” he said of Joel’s playing. “It’s unimaginable to have that much talent.”
The Billy Joel Town Hall 10th Anniversary airs on May 3 at 7 p.m. on Howard 101 and is currently available on demand on the SiriusXM app!
